In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a procedure by which female eggs are fertilized in a laboratory, creating one or more embryos. These embryos are then placed directly in the uterus.
Prior to the actual procedure, your ovaries will be stimulated to help mature multiple eggs for the treatment cycle. When your ovaries are ready, Dr. Madanes will perform the retrieval using ultra-sound guidance. Egg retrieval takes about 30 minutes and is performed under anesthesia to prevent any discomfort during the procedure.
Once retrieved, an Embryologist fertilizes the eggs with sperms to create embryos. Laboratory specialists at the Midwest Fertility Center monitor the embryos for healthy development, and at the appropriate developmental phase, the embryos will be transferred into the uterus. In an effort to reduce the occurrence of multiple gestations, Midwest Fertility Center follows the guidelines set forth by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in determining the appropriate number of embryos to transfer.
A pregnancy test is performed about two weeks later to determine whether IVF has been successful.
Because IVF is a complicated procedure, it’s rarely the first step in the infertility treatment process. For many couples, IVF shouldn’t be considered until less invasive and more cost effective treatments have been attempted and deemed unsuccessful.
However, IVF is a good option for couples diagnosed with:
Before entering a reproductive treatment cycle, Midwest Fertility Center reproductive specialists will perform a full diagnostic evaluation to help determine the cause and/or extent of your infertility. This evaluation typically takes up to one month and then you are ready to start your individualized treatment. Evaluation results, your age, the quality of your eggs and semen, and medical history will be used to formulate the ideal treatment plan individually tailored for you.
As with any fertility treatment, several factors influence the success rate, including age, overall health, and egg and semen quality.
Women 35 and younger have a nearly 60% success rate with IVF; for women over 35, that rate decreases every year; and women over 40 have an average between 11.5% - 25% success rate. As a woman’s age advances, success rates diminish into single digits. As technological advances in reproductive medicine continue to improve over time, this should increase success rates across all age groups.
In the United States, one out of every three women undergoing IVF achieves pregnancy, and one in three IVF pregnancies result in a live birth.
