What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) disrupts your regular menstrual cycle and healthy ovulation, preventing the egg from developing or being released as it should every month. As a result, those follicles can turn into ovarian cysts that either go away on their own or require surgical removal.

PCOS primarily involves two different hormones:

Androgens

Androgens are principally male hormones, but females produce them as well. Androgens control the development of “male” traits like balding. Women with PCOS have more androgens than is average for their sex, and these higher levels of androgens prevent ovulation and cause symptoms like facial hair, acne, and irregular periods.

Insulin

PCOS is part of a more significant metabolic syndrome, according to current medical findings. The culprit seems to be a disorder of the glucose metabolism as expressed in insulin resistance. Due to the body's resistance to insulin action, massive amounts of insulin are necessary. Aside from putting you at risk of developing adult-onset diabetes, high levels of insulin interfere with ovarian function and cause increased androgen secretion by the ovaries.

How is PCOS diagnosed?

Dr. Madanes usually makes a PCOS diagnosis after ruling out other conditions. After evaluating your symptoms, vitals, and family medical history, Dr. Madanes may order hormone tests and perform a sonogram to look at your ovaries and do a full metabolic syndrome assessment before confirming a diagnosis.

Diagnosing PCOS is critical. Not only can it impact your fertility, but sleep apnea, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer are all linked to PCOS. Pregnant women with PCOS are also at a higher risk for problems during pregnancy and delivery.

How is PCOS treated?

If you have PCOS, you’ll be relieved to know it doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant. PCOS has multiple treatment options, starting with medication to help with insulin resistance, followed by prescriptions to help induce ovulation, and finally IVF.

Every case of PCOS is unique. Dr. Madanes works with you to develop the best treatment plan available based on your specific fertility issues.
