Tubal ligation is the clinical term for having your “tubes tied.” It’s a permanent, surgical method of birth control that blocks your fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from being fertilized by sperm.
Many women choose to have their tubes tied to eliminate the need for birth control once they are done having children. Your fallopian tubes can be stitched, cut, clipped, or banded shut.
If you’ve had a change of heart and decided you want more children, there's a procedure for reversing your tubal ligation. Tubal ligation reversal essentially undoes a tubal ligation, untying, reopening, or reconnecting your fallopian tubes.
To determine if you’re a candidate for tubal ligation reversal, Dr. Madanes considers:
Dr. Madanes also confirms that there are no underlying issues that could prevent you and your partner from getting pregnant after a reversal. He’ll ensure that your fallopian tubes are still functioning correctly and order a sperm analysis for your partner (healthy sperm count is also needed for pregnancy to occur).
Provided there are no other fertility issues, your chances of getting pregnant after a tubal ligation reversal are good. In fact, most pregnancies happen within a year of the procedure.
Nevertheless, success depends on a few variables, including your age, the amount of scar tissue present, and your partner’s sperm quality. Should you have trouble getting pregnant, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is another available option.
